Frequently Asked Questions

What is an automatic standby generator?

An automatic standby generator is a back-up electrical system that comes on whenever the power from Alabama Power Company is interrupted for any reason. In less than a minute after a power outage occurs the generator is up and running, providing power to lights and appliances of your choosing. The generator sits outside on a concrete pad just like your air conditioning unit and it is powered by either natural gas or LP gas. The generator senses when power becomes available again from Alabama Power Co. and then shuts itself off….all automatically.

How long have you been installing and servicing generators?

We have been installing automatic standby generators since 1991. During that time we have become proficient in properly sizing, installing, and servicing these generators. Our Comfort Consultants are skilled in helping you determine exactly which heaters, lights, and appliances are important to you during a power outage. Our installers are trained in the proper installation of the generator, the transfer switch, the control wiring, the power wiring, and the gas piping. Our service technicians are trained in the repair and proper routine maintenance of Generac generators. We recommend that you use an experienced professional to have your generator installed and serviced.

What do people usually have connected to their generator?

Most people want to be able to use these items during a power outage:

  • Gas Furnace
  • Television
  • Microwave Oven
  • Refrigerator
  • Freezer
  • Toaster Oven
  • Garage Door Opener
  • Gas Cooktop
  • Some Lights

Some people want even more available:

  • Air Conditioning Unit
  • Heat Pump
  • Electric Oven
  • Electric Cooktop
  • All lights

Do these generators require maintenance?

Yes, we recommend periodic oil and filter changes and a check on the battery that starts the generator.

How does the battery stay charged?

The generator controls provide a trickle charge so that the battery stays charged and ready to start the generator when you need it.

I have heard that generators come on regularly even when there is no power outage. Is that true?

Yes, that’s true. The generators are designed to start automatically once a week and to run for about 15 minutes. This circulates oil through the system so that it stays lubricated and ready to run. It also lets you know that the battery is working and has not failed.

What brand of generator do you recommend?

We recommend Generac automatic standby generators. Generac has been designing and manufacturing backup power generators for residential, commercial, and industrial applications since 1959 and is now the world’s largest provider of residential standby generators.
